What is onycholysis?

Onycholysis is painless changes in the structure of the nail, manifested by the detachment of the plate from the bed. This process usually starts from the distal end of the plate and progresses towards the cuticles. The most common causes are mechanical injuries, contact dermatoses (such as nail fungus, psoriasis), and thyroid diseases or infections. In the case of mechanical injury, if the bed and matrix are not damaged, the nail should regenerate. In the case of dermatoses or infections, it is necessary to treat the cause, and nail regeneration should restore its proper attachment to the bed. It is important to care for the moisturizing and regeneration of the bed using appropriate preparations.

How does onycholysis look?

The nail begins to detach from the bed, and additionally changes color to white or yellow. In such a situation, quick intervention is necessary. The consequences of this condition may include the accumulation of air and impurities under the nail, which can lead to inflammation.

Causes of onycholysis include:

Regular, long wearing of uncomfortable footwear (too tight or too high heels);

Systemic diseases, such as iron deficiencies, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes;

Side effects of selected drugs;

Mechanical damage, resulting in the undermining of the nail plate;

Nail infections, especially fungal infections;

Skin conditions, such as lichen planus or atopic dermatitis;

Microtraumas caused during incorrect pedicure execution.
